The dos and don’ts of cleaning windows

The best time to clean your window is when it gets dirty. However, not everyone has the luxury of time and energy to clean their home windows every time a speck of dust settles on the panes. Thus, realistically it is viable to clean windows when you schedule your monthly house cleaning.

Climate, dust, location and other external factors affect the amount of dirt that is lodged on the windows. You need to keep a vigilant eye on the amount of dirt accumulated and you should clean the windows at timely intervals to keep the winds from clouding up due to extensive dirt. Here are a list of dos and don’t you have to follow when cleaning windows.

The Dos

Have proper cleaning equipment. This includes a squeegee/ soft wash cloth, cleaning chemicals and plenty of water. This is the basic requirements, but you can also invest in professional grade window cleaning equipment to help give your windows an expert cleaning every time.

The generally accepted method of cleaning windows is to clean the window with a mild solution first, then use a stronger solution to get rid of touch stains. You can either use home made window cleaning solutions made of vinegar, water and soap, or you can opt for a commercial window cleaning solution.

In case of tough stains, you can soak a piece of newspaper in the strong solution, apply it on the stained part and wait for a few minutes before cleaning the stain.

The don’ts

Avoid strong chemicals such as bleaches, strong soaps, grease remover etc. These do more harm than good for your windows.

Do not use abrasive materials such as steel wool to remove stains. Make sure to soak the satin in the cleaning chemical before wiping the surface gently with a soft cloth or a squeegee.
