The bacterial dance inside your vacuum cleaner

At Paragon Trading, we deal in some of the best in class vacuum cleaners that are suitable for all your domestic and commercial needs in Bahrain

You wouldn’t believe but a South African vacuum repair technician Gary Sheen is fascinated with collecting vacuum cleaners. Its borderline obsessive. At the last count, he has been reported to own 204 if them. And his family dog is called guess what- Dyson.

We are assuming most homes have fewer vacuum cleaners than the Sheen household, and we have an important announcement to make- vacuum cleaners have a connection with bacteria.

Yes, you heard that correct.

As per a British research that happened back in 2003, industrial vacuum cleaners are a reservoir of bacteria and give them lots of space and idea living conditions for living there, reproducing and making friends.

What will make you wonder about the things alive and kicking inside your regular or industrial vacuum cleaner is this: Scientists dosed the dust with salmonellae and sucked it inside the vacuum, and were able to recover it even after a month!

Another interesting part of the study was this: The bacterial count inside your vacuum cleaner directly correlates with the number of people in the surroundings and whether you are living in an urban or rural setting.

What may surprise you even more is that unlike the popular notion, there was absolutely no correlation with the number of children, presence of pets of shoes being worn in the surroundings.

Some of these American and Canadian scientists have propagated the fact that a vacuum cleaner can sometimes be a spreader of bacteria. Unless of course you cleanse and maintain it. It’s something you can’t live without. They even use vacuum cleaners in space on the International Space Station. The reason being Expeditions 30 and 31 reported dust (visible) on the walls and they hadn’t seen so much dust before.

Another study was done by Norwegian scientists back in 2015 that showed higher vacuuming frequency associated with an altered gut microbiome composition in pregnant women.

The researchers have found that frequent vacuum cleaning can result in growth of one particular bacterial species and lower levels of another. Both are good bacteria though.

Experts recommend regular filter and bag change depending on the type of regular or industrial vacuum cleaner you have. They also stress on the importance of vacuuming under and behind furniture, which we are often too lazy to carry out.
